What To Know About Bat Removal

By Robert Ross

Bats are not all bad to have around the home because they can help with the elimination of several kinds of bugs such as mosquitoes. Bats eat several thousands of mosquitoes every night, something that helps to keep the number of mosquitoes in check. However, bats can also be a real nuisance when they make their nests inside the home in places such as attics, chimneys, and inside the house. When that is the case, then one needs to conduct bat removal as soon as possible.

In most countries, all species of bats are protected animals. As such, it is against the law to move or disrupt with their nests and living conditions. However, when it is really necessary, one should call a specialist to have the bats removed. Successful removal of bats is dependent on several factors. One of the most important factor is the time of the year.

Timing is very crucial in the success of removing bats from the home. One should choose a time when the bats are not in hibernation or having pups. Removing when the bats are having pups usually leave pups behind to die. Once the adults are removed, it is hard to save the pups because they die from starvation and cannot be saved because they are hidden far into their hiding places.

Pups that are left behind starve to death and cause a very bad smell in the home. In the US and Canada, maternity season for bats start in May and continue up to the beginning of August. These months are not good for any removal efforts. One may also want to avoid removing bats in winter because they hibernate during these months.

The removal process, the next step should be identifying the points of entry into the home. Usually, one will notice bat droppings beneath the point of entry or the nest. There should be small bits of insect shells in the dropping to be sure that they are produced by bats. The droppings should not be inhaled because they cause histoplasmosis. Histoplasmosis is more likely to attack the young, old, and sickly people.

These animals can be removed through various methods, including one-way devices, blocking entrances, pesticides, and smoking. In case one settles for blocking of entrances, this should be carries out at nighttime. Bat go out of their nests to hunt for food at night. One should remove the blocking during day time to allow those that remained inside to get out.

The bats that were blocked inside will go out to look for food because they will be hungry. It is important to inspect the entire home for other entry points that the bats may use to gain access into the home. Once this is done, the bats will be gone by the following day. They will not return unless they find a new point on the house to make a nest.

Instead of blocking entry points, one may also use one-way devices. These devices can be purchased easily from the market or local stores. One may also make their own devices from materials such as empty caulk containers, PVC pipes, and netting.
